What does a gully do and why do I need one for my property?

It is typically found outside buildings and at the bottom of downpipes or in areas where surface water collects.
The gully drain has a grated cover on top to prevent debris like leaves or large objects from going into the drain. Below the grate, there is usually a trap, often referred to as a gully pot, which holds water and acts as a barrier to stop foul smells from the sewer system from coming back up the pipes.
